Installation
============
If you received this as a 'zip' file, unzip it to your hard disk first.
Copy the file TVMODD_I.PXP into the directory that your 3D Studio setup
file specifies for PROCESS-PATH (the default path is the 'PROCESS'
subdirectory of your 3D Studio home directory).
Copy the file TVMOD.MDX into the directory where the 3D Studio sample files
are located (by defualt, this is the MESHES subdirectory of the 3D Studio
home directory).
Running the ThumbView File Browser
======================================
Start 3D Studio from the DOS command line. From the 3D Editor, select the
'PXP Loader' option from the 'Program' menu at the top of the screen. This
will bring up a list of all of the PXP IPAS routines in your process directory.
Select the TVMODD item, click on 'OK', and 3D Studio will load the
File Browser.
Click on 'OK' to dismiss the initial text box.
You should now see the main window for the File browser. Click on the
'Browse' button in the lower left corner, and navigate to the directory
containing the sample mesh files that come with 3D Studio (BIRDSHOW.3DS is
one such file). Click on 'OK' to return to the main browser dialog. The
browser will now load the thumbnails from the index file and you can scroll
through these. Single clicking the scroll arrows moves through the list by
one line and clicking on the scroll bar moves one 'page'.
Note that you can also drag the thumb to any point in the list of images.
Until you release the thumb, only the file name appears, allowing you to
quickly find a file before you view its thumbnail.
Note that in the demo version of this product, not all files have
thumbnails available.
Viewing File Contents
=====================
If you select a file by clicking on its thumbnail, its thumbnail is
highlighted and its name is placed in the 'Selected File' window.
If you click on 'View', or double click on the thumbnail, the file contents
are loaded and the file viewer dialog is shown. Note that in the demo
version of this product, you can only view file contents for those files
which have a thumbnail available.
The file viewer dialog consists of a rendering window with associated
controls to the left, and a contents list box to the right. An information
panel is located at the bottom of the dialog box.
When the file viewer dialog is initially launched, it displays all of the
file's geometry in the rendering window. If you click in this window once
and move the cursor, the viewpoint is rotated and the geometry re-rendered.
Note that while the renderer is processing the model, the status indicator in
the top border of the dialog turns red. Once the model has been re-rendered,
this turns green.
If you click again, while the status indicator is green, the mouse movements
no longer affect the viewpoint.
Note the six buttons in the lower left border of the rendering window.
These control your interaction with the rendering window, as follows:
Button 1 (top) - Press to activate, sets 'rotate viewpoint' mode.
Button 2 - Press to activate, sets 'pan viewpoint' mode.
Button 3 - Zooms viewpoint in by 20% each time it is pressed.
Button 4 - Zooms viewpoint out by 20% each time it is pressed.
Button 5 - Zooms viewpoint to fit window extents each time it is
pressed.
Button 6 - Press to activate, auto-zooms viewpoint to fit extents.
This feature is used with the 'selected' and 'highlighted'
object' modes described below.
Shading modes
=============
The renderer will display the geometry as Gouraud-, Flat-, or Wire-shaded,
depending on the button selected at the top of the rendering window.
Object List
===========
This list is displayed when the 'Objects' button above the list box is active.
The list shows all of the objects in the file being viewed. If you click on
an object, the object becomes the highlighted object and additional
information for this object is shown in the information panel at the bottom
of the dialog.
If you click on the 'H' button at the top left of the rendering window, the
renderer redisplays only the highlighted object in the window. If the
AutoZoom button (see above) is active, the view is automatically adjusted to
fit the entire object in the display window.
If you double-click on an object in the list, its selection status is toggled.
(a selected object has an asterisk to the left of its name in the list).
By default, all objects are selected when the dialog is first launched. If you
click on the 'S' button at the top left of the rendering window, the
renderer redisplays only the currently selected objects in the window. If the
AutoZoom button (see above) is active, the view is automatically adjusted to
fit the entire object in the display window as the selection set of objects is
changed.
The 'All' and 'None' buttons below the list box select all objects and
de-select all objects, respectively.
Viewing Material Information
============================
If you click on the 'Materials' button at the top of the list box, a list of
materials used by the file is displayed. If you click on an item in this list,
additional information for the material is displayed in the information panel
at the bottom of the dialog.
Viewing Map File Usage
======================
If you click on the 'Maps' button at the top of the list box, a list of the
maps referenced by all of the materials in the file is displayed. If you
click on an item in this list, additional information for the map is displayed in the information panel
at the bottom of the dialog. If you double-click on an item in this list,
the Browser displays a windowed image of the map file, along with the file
name. If the image is smaller than a certain resolution, it is automatically
resized to show it more clearly. In this case, a multiplier indicator appears in
the bottom border of the image window. Pressing any key or clicking the
mouse dismisses the image window and returns you to the browser window.
Note that when listing materials or maps, the last view renderered remains
visible, but the viewpoint controls are disabled.
What the production version offers
==================================
The production version of this product allows you to load or merge geometry
from the file being viewed into your current 3D Studio drawing. Either the
entire file, or the selected subset of that file can be loaded.
You also get the other half of the mechanism for the browser:
The Index File Manager that allows you to create and maintain the index files
for use with any set of mesh files, even if they reside on a CD-ROM.
The production version also allows you to view the contents of a file, even
if no thumbnail is available for that file.
Compatibility
=============
This product has been fully tested with all versions of 3D Studio from 3.0
through 4.0 and supports 8-bit or 24-bit color displays. If you find a bug,
please let us know.
